The MOWEST Migration Monitoring Station

Jack Hilsabeck-Veteran BanderBander Jack Hilsabeck has been monitoring fall migration at the Otoe Creek Nature Area on the campus of Missouri Western State University for ten years. His banding station has not only shown local population trends for several species, it has provided University students and St. Joseph residents with the opportunity to work at the station. The MOWEST station is run entirely on the volunteer efforts of the individuals pictured here. Jack also teaches ornithology classes at Western.

The MOWEST banding station data has shown some interesting abundance patterns for several species, including Orange-crowned and Nashville Warblers, Red-eyed and Blue-headed Vireos, and Traill's and Least Flycatchers.
